Cole and Dean Kirchick Give Back in a Big Way

The phrase Tikkun Olam holds the idea that people bear responsibility not only for their own moral, spiritual, and material welfare, but also for the welfare of society at large. It is clear that Cole and Dean Kirchick, both 13, of Moreland Hills, understood this concept as they prepared for their Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, January 12th, 2019. Cole and Dean are seventh graders at University School, and decided that after hearing about ICTC’s work, that they would collect boxes of tennis clothes and shoes, as well as gently used rackets to donate to the summer camp for their service project.

Both boys are avid tennis players and train five to seven days per week at Cleveland Racquet Club, in private lessons, in clinics, and against friends. They compete in regional tournaments and have been working on both their singles and doubles games. The twins understand the financial cost of this sport at their level and wanted to help ensure that tennis was accessible for others as well. After hearing about the tennis camp from their mom, Caren, they decided this was one way they could give back to the community and share their love for the game.

Cole and Dean were able to collect over 50 rackets in total as well as several tennis bags, along with clothes and shoes for ICTC’s summer pro-shop at Thurgood Marshall Recreation Center. They plan to visit the camp this summer, and potentially volunteer as they get older.

We at ICTC want to thank Dean and Cole for choosing us as their service project for their Bar Mitvzah, and appreciate the effort they put into their collecting items at both CRC and Mayfield Racquet Club. Thank you, Cole and Dean, for illustrating the concept of Tikkun Olam.
